We’re less than a week away from Christmas, and like most people, you may be scrambling around trying to find a gift for your husband or wife. Finding something that says how much you love them is easier said than done! Why not take the weekend to make over a room in your home for them? Nothing says love and devotion like spending a whole day updating a living room or bedroom. An easy way to do this is to take a peek at their Pinterest board for ideas. Also, think back to any past conversations you may have had about how they want to spruce up your home. It’s a great way to show you’ve been listening all year as they expressed what they like.
Repaint Those Bland Walls
A living room is meant for just that: living. But, if you’re stuck with a living room that’s bland and dull, not very much living is going to happen. Are you tired of looking at white walls, and know that your spouse loves purple but just doesn’t have the time to paint? Go to a hardware store and have a sales associate help you find a beautiful shade that isn’t too bold or bright. Then, buy some brushes, a roller, and a tarp. Be sure to pick up some painters tape too, because you want this job to look as professional as possible. After all, you have to live in this room too! Once you have your materials, it’s time to start painting. Lay down a tarp to protect furniture and your floor. You’ll probably need two coats of paint. Once you’re done painting, it’s on to sprucing up the room.
Take Care of the Flooring
Now that the walls are taken care of, it’s time to update your flooring. If you have hardwood floors, take some time and refinish them. There’s nothing better than a shiny, refinished floor! If you have carpet, this is a great opportunity to steam clean, or even replace it. Pick a color that will complement the wall color you’ve chosen, and a soft texture that you can dig your bare feet into comfortably. You can also consider buying some fun rugs. Rugs are a less permanent option and are easy to switch out if you get tired of them or want something for a different season.
Don’t Forget The Finishing Touches!
With a beautiful color on the walls and great looking floors, now it’s time to add décor that pulls the room together. A great way to update is to buy some coordinating decorative pillows and throws for your couch. This can mean colored pillows (to match the walls) or maybe a cool pattern that your spouse will enjoy. If you really want to go above and beyond, you can buy some vases and put holiday plants in them. Still have some leftover paint? You can use it to give your furniture a fresh look too. If you do this, make sure that you remove any items that could get ruined, and put another tarp down. When you’re finished, you’ll have a cool one of a kind piece that makes a statement.
Making over a room is a great gift idea, and you can reap the benefits too. Maybe next year they’ll decide to make over a room for you! In five years, you may end up with a completely remodeled and made over home. It’s gifts like these that reflect the true meaning of the holidays and transform your house into a home.
